Women play an important role both in exile and when rebuilding lives after returning home. They raise children, pay school fees, work the farms and support their families. Yet most of them are excluded from land ownership and decision making processes, have limited access to education and employment and are frequently exposed to physical, psychological or sexual violence. Many suffer in silence.
Jesuit Refugee Service works to ensure that women's contributions are recognised and that they have equal access to education and employment opportunities. JRS staff also identifies refugee women who suffer or are at risk of suffering abuse and neglect and gives them a safe haven.
